Review : Spud by John van de Ruit

In a year that has been full of uninspring books, it is exciting to come across a book as brilliant as Spud. For it to be written by a South African author is unheard of.

Spud is John van de Ruit's first novel and hopefully not his last. The book is set in journal format and recounts the first year of John "Spud" Milton at a private high school in South Africa. This book is the funniest book I have come across this year, and could very well be the best I have ever read. For everyone that went to a similar high school buy this book. For those of you that didn't, still buy it.

As always, buy this book from Kalahari.net. They are selling it at a great price of R76.00

Edit: Good deals on the two sequels have been added to www.LoadedDeals.co.za : Spud - The Madness Continues and Spud - Learning to Fly. If you think they are good deals, Vote them Up. Or Down if you have found a better deal. Or better yet, if you have found a better deal, please Add the deal to loadeddeals.co.za so we can enjoy it too.

Just finished Spud, and very sad about that too. An absolutely great book, so well written. Really captures boarding school life so well, but from a whole different perspective. As well as being outrageously funny, it also is a quite a moving book - has everything! I really hope there is a sequel!!

Hi,my name is Matthew.I would have to say I am one of your biggest fans.I have read each spud book so many times that even my friends have started calling me spud.I think the characters in the book are so funny and completely match to make one crazy school. If I am in a bad mood I just pick up the book and then, because it is so funny,I start to laugh and be happy again.I definately can't wait for the new book to come out and for the film.I am no fortune teller but I think the movie will be voted 'funniest film of the year' for years to come.

Why did Gecko have to die? That completely ruined the book for me. My tears from laughter turned into tears of sadness then anger?!

Hi,it is me Matthew Varner again and I just wanted you to know I am one of your biggest fans and I really wish there were more South African authors like you.In truth I am actually asking you right now if I could audition for the movie SPUD. I play cricket for Eastern Transvaal Academy and am starting Grade 8 at King Edward High School next year, so I think I would be an ideal candidate for a part in your movie. I have just finished reading Spud, and I have to say, it is probably the funniest book I have ever read, since I am the same age as Spud. John van de Ruit describes our lives well. Great read, as well as hilarious. I recommend.

I live in Washington, DC and I cannot remember how this book got here. Someone from South Africa send it to me. It was in our bookcase for a while and one weekend I picked it up and just could not put it down. It is brilliant - one of the best depictions of an all boys school and hostel life. It brought back many great memories of being in an all boys school. We often forget all the great characters that go to school with us. South Africa is a truly unique country with awesome people. It is great to read a book like this to remind one of this. I immediately ordered the sequal on Kalahari and have been waiting for it for 4 weeks now. Cannot wait to get into the second year. Thanks for this amazing adventure.

your book is very funny and hooks the reader. i have read your first and second book. as for "learn how to fly" will be purchasing next week. in my opinion you are a good writer but not brilliant i see room for improvement unless... you have intentionally wrote like this to give a familiar feeling to kids.... but really i do like your work especially the mamba.
